Oriental Kopi JB City Square

★ 4.3

Oriental Kopi at JB City Square is the undisputed heavyweight of modern kopitiams for Singaporeans crossing the causeway. Despite intimidating queues, the massive, efficient staff keeps the line moving fast. It’s beloved for its monstrous, flaky egg tarts, crusty polo buns, and robust local plates like mee siam. With friendly service that even accommodates bulky luggage, it’s a mandatory, wallet-friendly pitstop for breakfast or a final takeaway haul before heading home.

The Insider Review

Oriental Kopi at JB City Square is a mandatory pitstop for Singaporeans. Yes, there is almost always a massive queue, but it moves swiftly. Housed on Level B1 (with a planned relocation to an upper floor due to renovations), the space is sprawling. A large, highly efficient staff keeps the turnover ruthless. Expect a bustling, noisy modern kopitiam atmosphere where tourists routinely stash their bulky luggage aside with the proactive help of accommodating servers.

The baked goods are the undisputed main draw. The signature Oriental Polo Bun (RM 8.90) is a heavyweight—crusty on top, fluffy inside, and stuffed with a thick slab of chilled butter and condensed milk. Regulars swear by dipping it straight into the Half Boiled Kampung Eggs (RM 4.60) for a sweet-savory hit. Do not skip the outrageously flaky, massive egg tarts. Corroborated reviews rave about the seasonal taro and sweet potato variations, which boast a rich, dense filling without tipping into cloying sweetness.

Beyond pastries, the savory mains hit hard for under $7 SGD per plate. The Mee Siam is a consistent crowd-pleaser, especially when paired with their tender rendang chicken or the giant curry chicken drumstick. The Char Kway Teow also earns high marks for its aggressive wok hei, loaded with fish cakes and prawns. Wash it down with their signature thick White Coffee or a massive "gao" (strong, undiluted) iced Milo.

Logistically, the cafe operates Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and opens slightly earlier at 8:30 AM on weekends. Arriving before the mall officially opens at 10:00 AM is the best way to dodge the morning rush. Total damage for two diners usually hovers around an affordable RM 75 inclusive of taxes, making it a high-quality spot to dine in or dabao (takeaway) before walking back to the checkpoint.
